Holding your leg out from under the cover is tightly associated with the regulation of the body temperature. When your body is hot, you do not feel sleepy at all and you are having trouble falling asleep. On the other hand when you are cold, then you are feeling sleepy. By putting your legs out from under the cover you are regulating your body temperature and therefore you will fall asleep easier and better.
