Denmark has just taken a big step to eliminate food waste and opened a store for selling surplus food.
The store is named Wefood and it was opened in the Danish capital Copenhagen. This store sells food at 30-50% lower prices than regular markets.
Per Bijera from the NGO, which opened the store said that Wefood is first waste food store in Denmark, and perhaps in the world, and this store is not intended only for those with low incomes, but for all who are concerned about the amount of food that is thrown away.
“Many believe that this is a very positive and politically correct way to solve this problem,” he said.
The manager of the store also hopes, that this store will be able to reduce the amount of food that is thrown away each year in Denmark, which is estimated at approximately 700,000 tons.
Danish Minister for Food and Ecology, Eva Kjer Hansen, said that it is pointless to throw so much food and it’s even bad for the environment.
She says that the opening of this store is an important step in solving the problem of food waste.
