There was an announcement by the Cuban Coast Guard that they intercepted an empty ship heading towards the island, presumed to be the SS Cotopaxi, a tramp steamer that disappeared in December 1925 and has since been related to the Bermuda Triangle legend. The ship was seen on May 16 for the first time, near a restricted military zone, west of Havana. The Guard’s attempt to communicate with the crew was unsuccessful and then they sent 3 patrol boats to intercept it.
After intercepting it, they were surprised to find that this ship was the abovementioned Cotopaxi steamer, nearly 100 years old. There were no people on it and the ship appeared to have been abandoned for many years. After a thorough research of the ship, the investigators found the captain’s logbook. There was evidence that this boat was associated with the Clinchfield Navigation Company, the owners of the SS Cotopaxi. However, there was no evidence showing what happened to the ship over the last 90 years. Rodolfo Salvador Cruz, a Cuban expert, claims that the logbook is authentic because it is full of important information about the crew’s life before the ship went missing, but the entries stop on December 1, 1925.
On 29 November 1925, the ship departed from Charleston, South Carolina and headed towards Havana, Cuba. The crew was consisted of 32 men, under the command of Captain W.J. Meyer. There was a cargo of 2340 tons of coal. The boat was reported missing two days later and remained missing for nearly 90 years.
General Abelardo Colome, vice president of the Council of Ministers, stated that the Cuban authorities were going to conduct a complete investigation to reveal the mysteries related to the ship’s disappearance and reappearance.
General Colome said that it is crucial to find out what actually happened with the ship. Moreover, he added that such incident could be negative for the economy so they should prevent this kind of disappearance happening again. Hence, he believes that it is time to solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle once and for all.
The Bermuda Triangle is a region covering the area between Miami, Puerto Rico and Bermuda and in this region; dozens of ships and planes have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. According to popular culture, many of the disappearances have been tied to paranormal and supernatural phenomena or extraterrestrial beings.
What’s more, there are theories that blame the leftover technology from the mythical lost continent of Atlantis for the disappearances.
Although these strange theories exist, a lot of scientist dispute the very existence of the Bermuda Triangle and place the blame on human mistakes and natural phenomena. The reappearance of the SS Cotopaxi has already yielded a lot of interest among the scientific world and could lead to change of mind in experts regarding this issue.
