Even “natural” wet wipes contain ingredients that are not natural.
If you’re not an expert, the ingredients for baby wipes are as if written in Arabic. In addition to water, it’s almost impossible to figure out the other ingredients.
They contain a bunch of chemicals and even the “natural” ones.
For example: “Water, Potassium Laureth Phosphate, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, DMDM Hydantoin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Malic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Fragrance”.
Those “unreadable” and unknown ingredients are the ones that worry the professionals.
“DMDM Hydantoin” a common component of wet wipes is a preservative that is often associated with allergies and even cancer, and artificial fragrances are often the culprits for allergic reactions.
The problem with natural disposable baby wipes
Even “natural” brands contain ingredients in their products such as benzyl alcohol, potassium sorbate, and sodium benzoate. Although these ingredients aren’t considered hazardous, they’re not natural. Most parents who buy “natural” wipes for their children aren’t aware of this when they buy these wipes.
Make your own wet wipes
To avoid harmful chemicals and to afford good health to your child, use wipes and clean water, or make your own wipes. You’ll need a few ingredients that you probably have in your home.
Ingredients:
- A firm white kitchen paper towel (three layers);
- 1 tablespoon teaspoon almond or olive oil;
- 1 tablespoon teaspoon of liquid soap;
- 1 tablespoon of pure Aloe Vera;
- 10 drops of essential oil of lavender or grapefruit;
- 1 and 1/4 cup distilled water.
Preparation:
Cut the kitchen paper towel to the shape of the box in which you’ll keep them. Pull the card from the middle. It is best to use three-layer or four-layer towels and place them in a suitable box with a lid (buy an empty box of wet wipes or use an old one).
Place the roll in the box. Mix all of the above mentioned ingredients and pour them into the box with the towels. Let them soak for about 10 minutes. After 10 – 15 minutes, your wet wipes will be ready to use. That’s it.
Re-usable homemade cotton wipes
The recipe is the same, except you’ll need to add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Make the wipes from cloth or cotton. Mix the before mentioned ingredients into a spray bottle. Spray the liquid on your wipes, put them in a box and use them when you need to. After using the wipes, wash them and they’ll be ready to use again. Ecological and safe!
