Passionate smokers usually live with this type of cough and refuse to accept the possibility that it’s most likely a symptom of a much more serious disease than the common cold. The only thing you can do to help yourself is to immediately stop smoking. Forever.
Doctors warn smokers that the cough mustn’t be ignored, since it’s an indicator of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that, in the UK alone, affects more than one million people.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a term for a range of diseases that affect the vital organs, among which is chronic bronchitis. Apparently, the disease is manifested by a series of symptoms, one of which is the lack of breath and difficulty in movement during minor physical activities, such as climbing steps.
In England, 25,000 people died from the disease, 90 per cent of which were smokers. In 2013 and 2014, the ambulance intervened in 130,000 cases related to smoking.
As a result, England has decided to start a campaign, which seeks to deter people from smoking. A promotional short film was made by the Olympian Iwan Thomas, whose mother was suffering from chronic obstructive lung disease, caused by smoking.
“I’ve never taken this disease seriously, but when trivial things, such as preparing tea, climbing stairs or going to the bus station become insurmountable obstacles, you realize how serious it is” – said Thomas.
Doctor Nicholas Hopkinson, a representative of the clinic for lung diseases in the hospital Royal Brompton warns: “Smoker’s cough is a final warning to stop the damage your lungs are taking.”
How to help yourself? Easy. Stop smoking today, because tomorrow it can be too late.
