Grapefruit is known as a healthy food, which is desirable to consume it regularly on a daily base. However, if you are thinking about the process of detoxification or if you are taking some drugs, then it is mandatory to remove it from your menu because in this case the grapefruit interferes with the work of your liver, the main catalyst organ in your body.

The liver plays an important role in your metabolism because it performs a number of very important functions: it keeps the glycogen (stored sugar), it produces the blood proteins, it removes the cholesterol, it starts the process of converting amino acids or other molecules into glucose after consumption of glycogen stores.

However its key role is the detox process that protects your body against the harmful effects of many toxins that today’s modern lifestyle brings upon you. Therefore, people usually say that the liver is the ‘mirror’ of your health.

The liver takes out the toxins from the food and the beverages that you consume, than it breaks them into less harmful substances and then it keeps them or removes them from the body. Therefore with the proper selection of foods you can help the liver to keep your body healthy and in the meantime the liver will smoothly perform its function.

Grapefruit – the forbidden ingredient

Grapefruit is the food that should be avoided if you preparing for a detoxification regime or if you are taking some medication. Although it is a very healthy foodstuff and it is desirable in the daily diet, in these cases the grapefruit interferes with the work of the liver.

More specifically, it slows down and blocks the action of the CYP314 enzyme, responsible for the breakdown of toxins and harmful substances. The role of this enzyme in the body is extremely important because it helps with the excretion of toxins from the body.
