Two servings of fatty fish a week could protect women from breast cancer. Researches have shown that the habit of consuming salmon reduces the chances of breast cancer by 14 percent.

A large review of studies have shown that two weekly servings of fatty fish like salmon may reduce the risk of breast cancer by 14 percent, according to a new Chinese study published in the British Medical Journal.

Fish provides us with omega-3 fatty acids that are important for brain development and they reduce inflammatory processes in it, the cardiovascular system and other cells.

But researches suggests that even in wealthy countries, such as the UK, nine out of 10 children and two-thirds of adults never eat oily fish. The human body cannot produce Omega-3 acids.

The researchers analyzed data from 26 studies of the United States, Europe and Asia that included 80,000 participants and more than 20,000 people affected by breast cancer.

The latest survey shows that only 0.1 additional grams or 0.1 percent more energy per day that comes from omega-3 fatty acids makes five percent lower risk of cancer. To achieve that women should eat two servings of fatty fish a week such as tuna, mackerel, salmon, herring or sardines. The aforementioned portion of fish should be 140 grams. White fish such as cod is also healthy, but contain less omega-3 fatty acids.

Women in Asia have lowest risk of breast cancer because they consume fish very often.

It should be noted that women who eat healthier are often thinner, which also contributes to a lower risk of breast cancer.
