7 Best Ways to Remove Skin Peeling

Jeff Montenegro · June 9, 2023 ·

Dry peeling skin is a condition that occurs when dead cells separate from the surface of the skin.

This also happens when your dermis lacks enough moisture. It is mandatory to alleviate this condition of the skin because dry skin can stimulate the development of wrinkles and fine lines on the dermis.

If you’re ready for a very effective skincare regimen, here are some ways to remove skin peeling.

Why does the skin start to peel off?

Dry, peeling skin is most often a sign of damage to the upper layer of your skin (epidermis) caused by sunburn.

In less common cases, peeling of the skin can be a sign of an immune system disorder or other disease. If peeling your skin isn’t sunstroke, talk to your doctor before trying home remedies.

If your skin started peeling off after a burn, there are things you can do to prevent it from getting worse.

As tempting as it is, don’t take off peeling skin. Instead, allow it to fall off your body on its own.

7 Ways to Stop Skin Peeling

Here are some treatment methods and tips on how to stop exfoliating once it’s started.

1. Take painkiller

Take an over-the-counter painkiller, such as ibuprofen or aspirin.

These drugs work to reduce inflammation and redness. They can also reduce the pain associated with a sunburn.

2. Use a soothing anti-inflammatory cream

Apply a topical anti-inflammatory cream, such as aloe vera or cortisone cream, to a sunburn.

Or – until you are allergic to aspirin – chop a few aspirin tablets into a fine powder and add a little water and make a paste. Apply this to parts of the body affected by sunburn.

Avoid oil-based creams or other fat-based oils as they can heat up and make your burns and peeling even worse.

Try to hydrate immediately after bathing, when your skin is still moist, to help seal moisture.

3. Enter a cold bath

Enter a cold (just below the lukewarm) bath. This can ease your sunburn pain and prevent further peeling of your skin.

Do not use soaps or bath oils when bathing. This can make your situation worse.

4. Be gentle with your skin

Avoid rubbing your skin with a towel after taking a bath. This can make peeling worse.

Instead, gently wipe the skin with a towel without rubbing.

5. Make a cold compress

Put a cool, moist compress on the skin for 20 to 30 minutes to relieve irritation and stop peeling.

Be careful not to apply ice directly to the skin as this may cause further irritation.

6. Stay hydrated

Be sure to keep your skin hydrated by consuming at least eight glasses of clear liquids a day for 8 hours while recovering from sunbathing. This will help reduce flaking.

7. Keep your skin covered

Protect your peeled skin from further damage by keeping it covered with clothing or a very thin layer of sunscreen with an SPF of 45 or more.

How long does the peeling last?

In most cases, your skin will start peeling off about three days after you burn. Peeling is usually stopped when the burn heals – about seven days for milder burns.

What to do about it?

Sunburns – even those that are not strong – can cause serious damage to your skin.

Sunburn significantly increases your chances of potentially deadly skin cancer and puts you at risk of premature aging.

Always protect your skin with clothing or sunscreen and avoid direct exposure to the sun by spending time outside, when the sun is lowest in the sky – early morning and evening.
