If you want to prevent some serious diseases then it is important for you to know that you must not reheat some of the already stored food.
If you notice that you do not have time to prepare a fresh cooked meal at home, then the worst thing you can do is reach for the already-made meals that need to be reheated. In most of the cases these foods can be very dangerous to your health.
At this point you should know that not all foods are suitable for reheating.Namely not all the bacteria can be destroyed by preparing your food this way.
“The Food Standards Agency”, and “The European Food Information Council” warned that these five foods must not be reheated.
Chicken
Chicken and other poultry, as well as eggs, are often infected with salmonella, which can be a particular problem if you eat chicken which was reheated in the microwave. Namely the microwave waves do not penetrate into all parts of the food, as when you cook it on the stove. For this reason, especially when it comes to chicken, you need to turn it several times in order to be equally heated on all sides. This way you will let the waves reach the middle parts of the meat.
Reheating chicken meat is not recommended because, unlike the red meat, the protein that is found in the chicken has a higher density. When exposed to heat, the molecules of this protein break down differently, which may cause you some stomach problems.
Rice
The most important thing about prepared, cooked rice is proper storage after the preparation. If after the cooking, the rice is stored at room temperature, the spores of the bacteria can multiply and can produce a poison that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Reheating the rice will not eliminate these toxins.
Potato
Much like the rice, the problem in potatoes is not reheating them, but the manner of storage. If the potatoes are held at room temperature, not refrigerated, then there is a possibility for development of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism, especially if the potatoes are packaged in a foil, which is eliminating the oxygen supply. Reheating the potatoes will not always eliminate the bacteria.
Spinach and other leafy vegetables
Spinach and other leafy vegetables, depending on where they were grown, can contain a lot of nitrates, which are not dangerous, but can be converted into nitrite and then into nitrosamines, which are known to be carcinogenic. They can affect the ability of the circulatory system to carry oxygen to the body. In young children it can lead to a condition known as “blue baby syndrome”, which is caused by respiratory distress.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms contain proteins that enzymes and microorganisms can very easily break. If you do not follow the rules, and not properly reheat the mushrooms, then you might have some stomach problems. It is recommended not to keep the mushrooms in your fridge for more than 24 hours, and remember the mushrooms must be reheated on a temperature above 70 degrees Celsius.
