Surely you once noticed the appearance of “blue lips”. Blue lips occur when the skin on the lips takes on a bluish tint color. This is mainly due to lack of oxygen in the blood or the extremely low temperatures. When the skin becomes bluish, this symptom is called cyanosis.
This can also happen when you are at high altitude, or if you lack oxygen, or in the extreme cases can be due to problems such as lung disease or heart defects. The lack of oxygen in the blood can lead to a blue coloration of the skin which is fastest seen in your hands, feet and lips.
Blue lips are a symptom that may indicate a serious medical condition and therefore you should seek medical advice. If you know someone or if you are having blue lips, and recognize symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, faintness or changes in level of consciousness or lethargy, immediately seek emergency medical care.
Symptoms that may occur along with blue lips are disorientation, fainting or changes in level of consciousness or lethargy, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing or shortness of breath, thickening of the tissue under the nail.
