Specks, dots, or “flies” that float in front of your eyes when you stare at the wall, or when you read, in most cases should not worry you at all. However, there are cases in which their appearance should worry you and you must visit a doctor as soon as they appear.
What you see, in these situations, are actually changes that occur within the eye, and not in front of you. The front two-thirds of the eyeball are filled with gelatin, a substance called vitreous.
If you try to concentrate on them, these floating particles are moving to the periphery of the eye. Namely at this point the vitreous changes, which leads to the appearance of fine particles that are usually composed of fibers of collagen.
These particles float around the vitreous, blocking the light that comes through the pupil and thus it creates shadows on the retina and the back of the eye. These are exactly the shadows that you see.
The only reason for panic is if you have a sudden rush of these floating particles, and if they are accompanied by flashes of light or momentary loss of vision. In such cases, you should immediately go to an ophthalmologist.
Specifically, this issue may indicate inflammation, bleeding, cut or separation of the retina, and this must be treated at once.
Therefore, you must see your doctor as soon as possible, because if you don’t visit your doctor immediately this may lead to permanent blindness. On the other hand, in most of the cases this blur is not a cause for concern.
