Most of the cough medicines taste good, but as soon as you read this story you will have a bad taste in your mouth.
McNeil, a branch of Johnson & Johnson, was using poor production procedures in 2001. Because of this they had to pull from sale many of the children’s and infant’s liquid, such as Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl.Right before recalling about 50 different products made in one Fort Washington, the company called the probability of harm “remote”.
These recalledwere distributed in the U.S., Canada, Dominican Republic, Dubai (UAE), Fiji, Guam, Guatemala, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and Kuwait. Parents were advised to buy medicines from other brands for their children and not give them the adult formulas of the same medicine.
So what was wrong with these products that are supposed to improve our health?
According to the company some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration ofactive ingredients than is specified. Others on the other hand may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements. While others may contain just tiny particles.
We have heard that a spoonful of sugar can help the medicine go down, but we have never heard that adding tiny bits of metal to the syrup we give to our children helps. In March 2015 McNeil plead guilty to a federal criminal charge. In 2009after a consumer found black spots in a bottle of children’s Tylenol, a complaint was made.
Traces of metal, such as nickel, iron and chromium, were found in the McNeil’s products. However they just kept on making the products. But when the recall happened in 2010 they got a taste of their own medicine, and now, five years later, they are owning up to the fact. Today we know that Big Pharma was only thinking with their wallets and wasn’t thinking at all for our best interests.
We should be able to have control over what we put in our bodies, especially what we are giving to our children. The best thing you can do when your kids are sick is give them time to rest. They should sleep a lot, stay hydrated and the most important thing is that they should eat healthy food. You should be very careful when you are giving medicines to your kids, because you don’t want to make them sicker with that same medicine.
